Nuclear Positioning: Dynein Needed for Microtubule Shrinkage-Coupled Movement
نویسنده
چکیده
Nuclear movement often requires interactions between the cell cortex and microtubules. A new study has revealed a novel protein interaction linking microtubule plus-ends with the cortex and a role for dynein in microtubule shrinkage-coupled movement.

Hrs1p/Mcp6p on the Meiotic SPB Organizes Astral Microtubule Arrays for Oscillatory Nuclear Movement
Microtubules and the motor protein dynein play pivotal roles in the movement and positioning of the nucleus and cytoplasmic organelles in a cell. In fission yeast, oscillatory movement of the nucleus termed horsetail nuclear movement (HNM) has been observed during meiotic prophase. HNM is led by an astral microtubule array emanating from the spindle pole body (SPB), a centrosome-equivalent orga...
متن کاملMicrotubule Interactions with the Cell Cortex Causing Nuclear Movements in Saccharomyces cerevisiae
During mitosis in budding yeast the nucleus first moves to the mother-bud neck and then into the neck. Both movements depend on interactions of cytoplasmic microtubules with the cortex. We investigated the mechanism of these movements in living cells using video analysis of GFP-labeled microtubules in wild-type cells and in EB1 and Arp1 mutants, which are defective in the first and second steps...
متن کاملRole of the spindle-pole-body protein ApsB and the cortex protein ApsA in microtubule organization and nuclear migration in Aspergillus nidulans.
Nuclear migration and positioning in Aspergillus nidulans depend on microtubules, the microtubule-dependent motor protein dynein, and auxiliary proteins, two of which are ApsA and ApsB. In apsA and apsB mutants nuclei are clustered and show various kinds of nuclear navigation defects, although nuclear migration itself is still possible. We studied the role of several components involved in nucl...
متن کاملPolar Transport in the Drosophila Oocyte Requires Dynein and Kinesin I Cooperation
BACKGROUND The cytoskeleton and associated motors play an important role in the establishment of intracellular polarity. Microtubule-based transport is required in many cell types for the asymmetric localization of mRNAs and organelles. A striking example is the Drosophila oocyte, where microtubule-dependent processes govern the asymmetric positioning of the nucleus and the localization to dist...
متن کاملOpposing microtubule motors drive robust nuclear dynamics in developing muscle cells.
Dynamic interactions with the cytoskeleton drive the movement and positioning of nuclei in many cell types. During muscle cell development, myoblasts fuse to form syncytial myofibers with nuclei positioned regularly along the length of the cell. Nuclear translocation in developing myotubes requires microtubules, but the mechanisms involved have not been elucidated. We find that as nuclei active...
